In addition to the texts for this
class, I’m reading Kelly Gallagher’s Readicide: How Schools are Killing Reading
and What You Can Do About It (2009). I “discovered” him a year
or so ago when he published his latest book, Write Like This (2011). He’s an
English teacher at an urban high school in California, a superb educator, and
an excellent writer. If you’re looking for ways to help improve your students’
writing, I’d definitely recommend Write Like This. So far, Readicide is
good, but not quite as immediately useful.
